MUSIC is a unique form of communication that can change the way pupils feel, think and act. It forms part of an individual’s identity and positive interaction with music can develop pupils’ competence as learners and increase their self-esteem. Music brings together intellect and feeling and enables personal expression, reflection and emotional development. As an integral part of culture, past and present, music helps pupils understand themselves, relate to others and develop their cultural understanding, forging important links between home, school and the wider world.

The Music Department at The Priory Academy LSST provides an open, exciting and challenging environment for all students to advance as musicians, developing knowledge, skills and understanding through the integration of performing, composing and listening. Within the curriculum we cover a huge range of topics from Japanese traditional classical music to popular Western genres, as well as such diverse areas as Experimental Music that questions the very nature of music and creating soundtracks for the moving image. ICT is incorporated into the delivery of many units throughout all key stages. The department consists of two well-equipped teaching rooms, with up to date technology including two complete class sets of computers and keyboards. There is also a full working studio and three practice rooms.

MUSIC EDUCATION IN THE CLASSROOM encourages active involvement in different forms of music-making, both individual and communal, helping to develop a sense of individual and group identity and togetherness. Music learning develops pupils’ critical skills: their ability to listen, to appreciate a wide variety of music, and to make judgements about musical quality. It also increases self-discipline, creativity, aesthetic sensitivity and fulfilment. Standards are high and large numbers of students participate in a diverse and vibrant programme of musical activities.

Opportunities to learn MUSIC BEYOND THE CLASSROOM.  A dedicated and enthusiastic team of ten peripatetic staff deliver individual instrumental and vocal tuition. The reputation of our extra-curricular groups continues to grow, and in particular our many choirs and instrumental ensembles have achieved great success at the Lincoln Music Festival. A hugely successful academy musical production takes place each year, including recent productions of Les Miserables, Sound of Music, Fiddler on the Roof, Wizard of Oz, Threepenny Opera, West Side Story and Oliver. The annual summer-evening Arts Extravaganza also provides opportunities for all arts departments to display the wealth of exceptional talent within the school, through a multitude of simultaneous events and performances. There are several additional recitals each year and the extremely well attended Carol Service; each providing further musical enrichment opportunities. We also provide a series of lunchtime concerts in the Chapel, where students are able to perform to friends in a less formal setting.
