What makes us passionate about our subject? (Intent)

We are passionate about Sociology because it helps students see the world differently. It encourages them to question what many people take for granted and to explore how society shapes our identities, opportunities, values and experiences. Through studying topics such as education, families, crime and social inequality, students begin to understand the powerful forces that influence both individual lives and wider social change. 

Our aim is to foster curiosity about the society we live in and to develop students who are thoughtful, informed and willing to challenge assumptions. Sociology exposes students to a range of perspectives and debates, encouraging them to consider different viewpoints and evaluate evidence critically. We want students to appreciate the beauty of Sociology as a subject that connects personal experiences to wider social issues, helping them to make sense of the world around them. Through this, students develop the confidence to ask difficult questions, engage with contemporary issues and become active, reflective members of society. 

What do our students gain by studying our subject? (Impact)

Through studying AQA A Level Sociology, students gain a deeper understanding of the social world and their place within it. They develop strong analytical, evaluative and communication skills by examining sociological theories, interpreting research and applying evidence to contemporary issues. Students learn to think critically about topics such as social inequality, culture, power and identity, enabling them to challenge stereotypes and engage thoughtfully with different perspectives. 

Beyond academic success, Sociology equips students with cultural awareness, empathy and the ability to understand complex social issues at both a local and global level. These skills prepare them well for higher education and careers in areas such as teaching, social work, law, policing, journalism, public services and the social sciences. Ultimately, students leave Sociology as more informed, reflective and socially aware individuals who are able to engage critically with the society in which they live and contribute positively to it.
