Mobile Phone Procedures

From 8.20 am (or as soon as students enter the Academy buildings if earlier than this) until after 3.05 pm, when the student has left the Academy buildings, students must turn off mobile phones and other smart technology with similar functionality, and mobile phones must be put away in the student's bag. Mobile phones can no longer be stored in blazers or pockets and must be put into school bags. The mobile phone must not be taken out of the bag before leaving the Academy buildings at the end of the academy day under any circumstances. If a student has a genuine need to make contact with a parent or carer, they must discuss this with a member of staff.

Students in Year 12 or Year 13 are permitted to use mobile phones and other devices in the Common Room and in other designated Sixth Form areas, such as lessons and supervised studies, if directed to by members of staff. Sixth Form students are not allowed to use their mobile phones outside these areas.

Whenever a student is found to be using their mobile phone, or other smart technology with similar functionality, in contravention to this guidance, the mobile phone will be confiscated and taken to the Pastoral Administration Assistant in the Pastoral Room or to the Learning Strategies office. The confiscation will be recorded on Satchel by the Pastoral Administration Assistant or by the Learning Strategies Administration Assistant.

The student will need to collect the mobile phone from the Pastoral Room at the end of the academy day unless another location has been agreed with the student.

If a phone is confiscated during period 5, the teacher will confiscate the mobile phone for the lesson and return it to the student at the end of the lesson – this will also be recorded on satchel.

As well as the confiscation of the phone, there will also be further consequences at each confiscation.

Confiscation

Consequence

1

Mobile Phone confiscated. Logged on Satchel and Head of Year detention.

2

Mobile phone confiscated. Logged on Satchel and SLT detention.

3

Mobile phone confiscated. Logged on Satchel and the student goes to reflection for a period of time. Parents/carers contacted directly. Phone to be handed in every day for a specified period.

4

Mobile phone confiscated. Logged on Satchel. Meeting with parents/carers to discuss potential further consequences and phone not being in school.

Where a student is persistently having a mobile phone confiscated, it will not be returned to them and the pastoral team will make contact with parents/carers for them to collect the mobile phone and to discuss a personalised plan for the mobile phone for that student.
