Nat West U15 Bowl Match Report

Wath Comprehensive School 24 – 59 The Priory Academy LSST

Last week the Under 15s rugby squad travelled to Rotherham for their next fixture in the national cup.

Despite being reminded of the importance of switching on mentally as well as warming up physically, the boys conceded a try straight from the start as they weren’t paying attention from the kick-off or the resulting lineout, allowing Wath to score a try in the right-hand corner…

However, the boys responded well and soon levelled the scores once they had their hands on the ball. Continued pressure and good supporting lines were rewarded when Will Czajkowski crossed over on the left for the first of his five tries. Jess Wright was unable to add the extras.

Not long after this, LSST took the lead which they would hold for the rest of the game after Matt Marriott picked up a dropped ball by Wath and ran forty metres along the right touchline to score. Jess slotted the resulting conversion.

Despite taking the lead, the boys were never able to fully extend it in the first half and let Wath in for their second try following a knock on. Straight from our re-start though, the boys put the gap out to 9 points as Rory Standish collected the kick-off, ran through a Wath tackler, and offloaded it to captain Alex Watt to score on the right. Jess added the extras.

Another try soon came for LSST as the ball was moved through the hands to the left and finished in the corner by Alastair Jones. Jess missed the conversion. Despite this, Wath soon forced themselves back into the game with continued pressure and they scored under the posts following a series of penalties given away by LSST.

The first half finished on a high though as Will Czajkowski received the ball following some good hands by the boys and dotted down under the posts for his second try  - with Jess adding the extras. 17 – 31 at halftime. However, the second half started exactly the same as the first and an unorganised LSST defence let Wath in for their fourth, and thankfully, last try in the corner.

Following this, the boys’ defence tightened massively and LSST scored four unanswered tries. The first being Will Czajkowski completing his hat trick when he was tackled but not at his legs, meaning he could just overpower the attempted maul and go over under the posts. Jess made the conversion. Not long after this, a lovely gliding fity metre run from Joe Connolly in the middle of the pitch led to a high tackle by Wath, and from the resulting penalty Henry Everett darted over in the left-hand corner. Jess converted the kick.

The match finished with two further tries from Will Czajkowski, the first being when he pounced from less than five metres on a kick that had been successfully charged down by Luke Vinter, and the second when he broke through the Wath defensive and ran from the halfway land for his easiest score of the day. Jess was successful in both conversion attempts.

Man of the match – Will Czajkowski

Honourable mentions – Rory Standish, captain Alex Watt, Joe Connolly, and Jess Wright.

Thank you for releasing the boys to play.  They were a credit to the Academy both on and off the field. Thank you to Mr Barker as well for coming with us.
