4x4 Challenge Nationals

Team Pink Lemonade travelled down to the Heritage Motor Centre on Friday 27th March to participate in the Land Rover 4x4 In Schools Challenge UK National Final. Very surprisingly the traffic was light and we arrived in plenty of time to set up the Pit Display area before the event started at 10:00am. After welcoming speeches and the infamous track unveiling the team was straight into the challenge with presentations in quick succession  to the Pit Display, Engineering and PowerPoint presentation judges. The girls were very confident and the judges took their ‘bribes’ of pink lemonade and pink cup cakes with great delight. That took us onto lunch and after a quick break back into the fray with the dreaded scrutineering followed by the track drives. The vehicle passed the scrutineering stage with full marks and about 0.5mm clearance on its length. The main track however proved to be more difficult than the Regional Final and emotions ran high but with a lot of encouragement they drove the vehicle around, over and through the Land Rover circuit and then on to the final assessment, the trailer towing circuit. Those ‘nasty’ judges had decided to put another vehicle into the trailer and thus increase its weight but not a problem to our team who drove up the hill with no difficulty, the problem came when they went downhill and the trailer was pushing, unfortunately the vehicle came off the side. Not all was lost as the vehicle was placed at the bottom of the hill ready to tackle the reversing and with plenty of time in hand this was managed with only a minor infringement of crossing a boundary line. Now with all the stages completed it was time to relax with a wander around the Motor Centre before the awards ceremony.

Though the team did not have a successful track display all the other sections went very well and it was with some hope that an award might come their way. That hope was increased when the nominations for best Team Identity were announced and turned into reality when the winner was announced as Team Pink Lemonade. Alas the award did not come with an invite to the World Finals and so this year’s challenge came to an end.

Please come down and have a look at the vehicle and award located in the Technology Concourse cabinet.
