Visiting Author Event is a Great Success

Georgia Twynham's visit to the school on 25th April was extremely popular with budding authors in every year group!

This week, Georgia Twynham, an upbeat and successful author, came to The Priory Academy LSST to lead an energetic day of lectures, book signing and most importantly, give The Young Journalist Academy a revealing interview! Morgan Rycroft, the lucky interviewer, uncovered what the author really had to say about writing:

“At first I was very religious about writing my first novel because I wrote everyday, all day; whilst my daughter went to school, I would sit and write.”

She further expressed how she had to teach herself to write whenever she could, and block out any distractions: “Even if I am in a play barn with children screaming all around me, I will be in my own world writing away…”

During the interview, we were able to find some of the inspirations she acquired for her book, with the main one being the characters. Some of their personalities and skills were even based on two Priory students - Flo and Lottie in Year 12 - whom she met during a fencing lesson when conducting research for her book. Georgia described to us how she used Flo as a character in her second book. Flo, by the way, is a dead girl who chews on tobacco!

During her day here, Georgia led two creative writing workshops for Year 7,8 and 9, followed by a book signing at lunchtime. After school, over forty students, ranging from Year 7 to Year 13, remained behind to attend a Question and Answer session about becoming an author. One attendee commented afterwards, "I've gained so much insight into what it's really like to be a professional writer, and she gave us so many tips on how to improve our skills and get ourselves noticed."

Georgia informed us that she was currently writing a series of six books, although only the first three -  The Thirteenth, The Turncoat and Nyteria Rising - have been published so far. She has mapped the last three out, though.

The series follows the life of Valerie Saunders, an extraordinary girl with super powers.

Georgia’s latest book, Nyteria Rising, is released in Waterstones this Saturday.
