What makes us passionate about our subject? (Intent)

Mathematics is a creative discipline that has evolved over centuries to provide solutions to problems both great and small.  Mathematics is an essential tool in other subjects, providing areas such as engineering, technology and science with the ability to solve problems.  By developing financial literacy, Mathematics creates powerful individuals, with an appreciation of what is required to secure their future.  A solid foundation in the fundamentals of Mathematics is also essential in employment.  An education in Mathematics provides the ability to develop reasoning skills, an appreciation of the beauty and power our surroundings, the world and the universe, and ultimately a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.  As a department we pride ourselves in the large numbers of students studying Mathematics and Further Mathematics post 16, and our curriculum is designed with this in mind.

What do our students gain by studying our subject? (Impact)

The Mathematics curriculum aims to ensure that all students become fluent in the fundamentals of Mathematics, so that students develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately. In Years 7 - 9, students will be given the opportunity to master the key skills and processes required for the more challenging or abstract mathematical concepts that are taught in Year 10 and beyond.

Lessons in all key stages will require students to solve problems by applying Mathematics, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.  The most able will be challenged through being offered rich and sophisticated problems before any acceleration through new content.  This bolsters student perception in the power of Mathematics to solve real life problems. 

Students will gain an appreciation of the real life applications of the mathematics that they are studying. Seeing where the processes studied are used in diverse occupations will give light to where and when they would need to use these topics in later life.  An understanding of financial mathematics will be developed in Year 10.  An understanding of taxation, pensions, pay day loans, mortgages and budgeting is vital for the future of any student.

Students will also be encouraged to reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, discovering relationships and generalisations, and by developing an argument or proof using mathematical language.  This is reinforced with ICCAMS lessons, developing the multiplicative reasoning and mathematical literacy in all students.
